In most of Austria, beverage cartons have been collected together with other types of packaging since 2016 (yellow bag/yellow bin scheme). A separate collection service (Öko-Box scheme) is continued only in Vienna.
Drink cartons are recycled in board mills, where the wood fibre is separated from the plastic and aluminium. The recovered wood fibres can be used in the production of cardboard, while the plastic and aluminium components are used for energy recovery.
What happens next?
The wood fibres in beverage cartons are made into new cardboard. Only the plastic and aluminium components are used for energy recovery.
